Steinberg Remix Audio Sequencer Software
Great leaps forward aren't that frequent in the world of
home music software but with Remix the German software company Steinberg
can claim to have staked out a chunk of interesting new ground.
The new angle is that, with Remix, you are able to make and
mix your DIY sounds in "real time": in other words you can bring in moods and
grooves from other DJs, real musicians, the TV or radio, even your sister
playing her snare drum in the bedroom next door--and then you can weave these
fresh sounds into your normal computer-generated sonic tapestry. These samples
can be continuously matched for tempo, resonance, and pitch, with the stuff you
are generating electronically. It doesn't even matter if the tempo of your
sample changes mid-riff: the software will still sort this out. Other facilities
enable you to mix in some nifty real-time effects, or paste and move all samples
without interrupting the groove; meanwhile a splendid editing interface allows
you to alter the session with that 20-20 musical hindsight. You can also use
some of the 500 on-disk samples to nudge things along if the creative juices run
dry.
